Wii Fit Friday Kickin’ It Up a Notch

First, I have to thank Mr. Boake Moore for the help content he has provided!  Without it I think that I would hang steady at the weight I am.

Now the Fit Friday update a day early…

Nothings changed since last post.  A bit depressing since I still wanted to lower my overall numbers.   However, to look on the bright side, I have not gained anything either!  Yea.  In my book, I consider that progress.  This prevents me from becoming a Wii Fit distraught fat girl.  LOL  I am making progress, just not as fast as I would like!  This is where Boake enters the picture…

I went on the internet to see if I could find any structured Wii workouts.  A lot of what I found was useless information.  Boake at least had a starting list that got me to thinking about how I did my wii fit workouts.  I need to get a better routine in place for my workouts.  I have no specific place, time, or order of activities in place to maximize my return.  I am thinking that I am going to consult me local friend who is actually a personal trainer.  Then I can have a tailor made plan for my Wii Fit weight loss regime.  Then my Wii Fit Fridays can actually have some progress and hopefully inspire others to take up the challenge!

Wii Fit Workout Tips

The WII Fit works. And works well. And it can work for you. Here are my top 10 tips to make it work for you:

Top 10 WII FIT Tips

1. Work out regularly and everyday if possible

2. Do not do the body test every day as directed; do it every other workout or even every third workout. Every day is too often and unless done at the same time each day your weigh will naturally vary 2 pounds

3. Work out for at least 30 minutes each day

4. The balance games do not count in your workout. Only do then after your workout is complete

5. Focus on the aerobics to maximize weight gain. Make sure 80% of your time goes to aerobics.

6. Use the yoga and strength modules as rest periods between your aerobic choices

7. After 3 weeks focus on the free steps and free run – do at least 10 minutes of either one every workout. If you can build up to 20 minutes and then 30 minutes of the “Free Steps” or “Free Run” – this will really improve your fitness program and calorie burn

8. To get a 30 minute workout you need to allocate 45 minutes; for an hour of workout you need to allocate 90 minutes. Which is really like working out at the gym when you consider all the waiting time and setting up

9. The balance games make it fun but they don’t burn calories. Too many people spend all their time trying to improve their balance games scores – end up doing them for an hour – and then wonder why they didn’t lose weight after they worked out for 2 hours. Again the balance games don’t burn calories and should not be considered as a workout

10. Find a partner to work out on your same system. Even if you work out together you can see their scores and progress and the competition will drive you to improve and work out harder.

11. Work out regularly and everyday if possible. Work hard and the results will come. Its not a miracle worker but if you try every day you will see the results.

And heres a good workout routine

1. Aerobics – run short distance warm up 2 minutes

2. Aerobics – boxing or steps – 5 minutes

3. Strength – 3 routines

4. Aerobics – free run 20 minutes

5. Yoga – 3 routines

6. Aerobics – boxing or stairs

7. Yoga and strength – 5 routines or 10 minutes

8. aerobics – 15 minutes

Have a great workout!

Now the balance games are a lot of fun and quite addictive. They can be used as a rest period or a way to take a break. And they are quite addictive – so please be careful or you will find yourself spending an hour playing games versus working out. The best way to use the balance games is a reward for a hard workout. Work out for an hour and then play the games. Or workout in the morning and play the games in the evening as a stress reliever.

One other hint with the workout. Once you get comfortable with the workout always use the maximum reps allowed. And when you really get comfortable start using free weights with your workout. For example use handweights when you do the 30 minute run or use handweights while doing the strength exercises. And find a friend to push you. Competition on scores only pushes you that much harder

How to Lose Weight Using the Wii Fit

Wii Fit is a combination of fitness and fun, designed for everyone, young and old. By playing Wii Fit a little every day, you, your friends, and your family can work towards personal goals of better health and fitness. And lose some weight? YES

So can one lose weight using the Wii fit- that’s the million dollar question?  YES DEFINITELY.  As long as you use it regularly and with the proper workout – with 4 to 5 regular 45 minute workouts per week you will reach your weight loss goals and get fit and have fun doing it.

But just as important is the type of  workout you choose. Many people have reported the Wii Fit did not help them lose weight or get fit and there are 2 reasons for this – they didn’t work out on a regular basis and when they did they used the wrong workout.  So here’s the way to lose weight using your new Christmas gift(and I am assuming you are routinely working out 5 times a week for a minimum of 45 minutes a week:

Rule 1: The balance games are fun but do not really help so they are not part of the routine. They are only to be used as a break after completing the aerobic workout.  So after completing the 10 minute advance step program you can use a balance game to catch your breath. But other than that they are not to be a part of your regular routine. Or after you have lost your five pounds for the week you can reward yourself with a 10 minute game of soccer ball goalie. But people who complained about not losing weight spent too much time playing the balance games. They help your hand eye coordination but they do nothing to help you reach your weight loss goals. Avoid them or do them extras above and beyond your normal workout.

Rule 2: Do 3 Aerobic exercises every session. Whether its boxing or steps or running or hoola hoops be sure you do at least 3 aerobic programs. And go as long as the system will allow you. So once the aerobic steps allows you to complete 5 minutes instead of 3 minutes always step up to and complete the extra time. And alternate between the aerobics and the other programs. For example start with a long run then do a couple “yoga’s” followed by the aerobic boxing and then maybe a strength program and then back to a step program. The key is to pick the exercises you like but to switch back and forth with at least half your time doing aerobics and no balance games.

Rule 3: Balance the rest of the session with yoga and strength exercises.

Rule 4: Workout at least every other day and at least 5 times a week but only completes the body test every other workout session. It’s great to monitor your results but every day is too often. Following this routine I have lost 20 pounds in 7 weeks and 26 pounds in 16 weeks. Its averaged 3 pounds a week with several weeks of 5 pound weight loses. In conclusion, it works. But like any exercise it only works if the person using it is willing to put in the effort. I could have achieved the same results simply by doing sit-ups and push-ups every day, and going for a run.  However I don’t realistically believe that I would have had enough motivation to do that. It works because it shows me everyday how much I weigh, how much time I’ve invested, and how well I am doing on my exercises. It also keeps fantastic records that I can look back on and it makes charts showing my progress (or lack thereof). The balance board is nothing magical. Just by standing on it you don’t get a better body. You have to put in the time. What Wii Fit tries to do is to make that time enjoyable, and for me it accomplished that goal. I did the work – it helped record it, make it fun and motivated me.

The Wii Balance Board is more than just a scale; it can read your real-life movements and bring them to life on screen, just like the Wii Remote” controller. Realistically snowboard down a mountain or walk a tight rope; it’s just one more way to get into the game.

The Body Test in Wii Fit is a short and simple set of activities used to gauge your body’s performance. After choosing a Mii” – a virtual  caricature unique to Wii – to represent you, use the Wii Balance Board to measure your center of balance, Body Mass Index (BMI), and body control. Based on these results, you can also determine your Wii Fit Age. The whole family can engage in the Body Test and compare their progress together! Check your daily progress in Wii Fit with easy-to-understand charts and graphs. The orange line you see in the center of the graph represents your BMI the first time you checked it. From then on, it’s easy to tell how you’ve done since you started using Wii Fit. You can also set goals, check your Wii Fit Age, and even enter exercise time you’ve done outside of Wii Fit.

As you spend time exercising, you’ll earn Fit Credits that unlock additional exercises and activities within these categories. Wii Fit also tracks the activities you do the most and puts them into the Favorites category.

- Strength Training: Put your strength to the test with muscle-toning exercises like Single Leg Extension, Sideways Leg Lift, Arm and Leg Lift, Single-Arm Stand, Torso Twists, Rowing Squat, Single Leg Twist, Lunge, Push-Up and Side Plank, Jackknife, Plank and Triceps Extension. Challenges include Push-Up Challenge, Plank Challenge and Jackknife Challenge. -

Aerobics: Get your heart pumping with fun, interactive Aerobic exercises like Hula Hoop®, Basic Step, Basic Run, Super Hula Hoop, Advanced Step, 2-P Run, Rhythm Boxing, Free Step and Free Run.

- Yoga: Work on your balance and flexibility with Yoga poses and activities like Deep Breathing, Half-Moon, Dance, Cobra, Bridge, Spinal Twist, Shoulder Stand, Warrior, Tree, Sun Salutation, Standing Knee, Palm Tree, Chair, Triangle and Downward-Facing Dog.

-  Balance Games: Get into the action with fun, balanced-based games like Soccer Heading, Ski Slalom, Ski Jump, Table Tilt, Tightrope Walk, Balance Bubble, Penguin Slide, Snowboard Slalom and Lotus Focus. Tracking Results: – Keep tabs on your daily progress with easy-to-understand graphs and charts. Using your personal profile, you can set goals, view a graph of your BMI results over time, see how many Fit Credits you’ve earned, check your Wii Fit Age and even enter exercise time you’ve done outside of Wii Fit. It’s all about coming back and exercising a little every day, and the personal profile makes tracking your daily progress simple and easy.

- You can quickly check your Wii Fit Age and BMI without even putting the game in the console by going directly to the Wii Fit Channel. -  On the profile-selection screen, everyone in the family can see each other’s recent BMI progress and Fit Credit total. This will allow families to have a friendly competition to exercise and get fit.

Wii Fit can help you learn more about your balance, and give you tips on how to improve Create a Profile:

- Before you jump into doing exercises and activities, you’ll start by creating your own profile. Choose a Mii, enter your height and age information, and do a few quick tests:

- BMI Check: BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is the standard used by agencies such as the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health. To check your BMI, you’ll enter your height then stand on the Wii Balance Board and let it read your weight.

- Wii Fit Age: After you’ve checked your BMI, you’ll do a basic balance test and find out your current Wii Fit Age. This basic balance test measures how well you can control your left and right balance. Based on the results, you’ll be assigned a Wii Fit Age.

Body Test: Wii Fit works best if you perform a Body Test every week not every day as they recommend. In this test, you’ll use the Wii Balance Board accessory to measure your center of balance, Body Mass Index (BMI), and body control. Based on these results, you can also determine your Wii Fit Age. Much like Brain Age”®, you can chart your daily progress and compare it against previous results, as well as other friends and family who play Wii Fit.

Game titles for Wii Announced

I love that the developers are taking into account the fact that we now have another type controller in consideration as they program their newest games. The latest titles to be announced are Go Play Series by Majesco, which are Wii Balance Board compatible, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, which utilizes the Balance Board in some features for more realistic game play. While we will have more skiing and snowboarding in the Winter Games, I am hopeful the titles will continue to expand the use of the balance board especially since the other titles mix motion based fun with everyday activities according to the press release.

The Go Play Series titles currently include the planned titles of Lumberjax, City Sports, and Circus Star. The anticipated release date for these Wii games is spring, summer, and fall respectively. Sega and Nintendo plan to release the Winter Olympic title late 2009, probably just in time for the Christmas shopping season.

Here are the links to the Sega/Nintendo and Majesco press releases.

Wii Fit Weight Loss aspirations

Was surfing the web, another hobby of mine. Always curious of how others are faring with the Wii Fit, I found this site.  This is what I aspire to with my Wii Fit workouts.  I have a genral downward trend since starting last October, but nothing as far as reducing sizes.  :(

I would be greatful to one clothing size right now since I went shopping and found that I am way not the size I thought I was.  (Try two sizes bigger….)  I know it works, I just have to hang in there and be dedicated.  Time to quit surfing and get on that Wii Fit Balance Board.  No more excuse!~

Diary of Wii Fit Weight Loss

I had to edit the name a bit since it is not Friday. However, I did weigh in and see where I was on Friday. I was still the same according to my last weigh in. That is not bad considering I did not watch what I ate or how much activity I had for the time frame. I have to dedicate myself to my goals. I have been allowing family life to steal my time from the Wii Fit. I think that January was more active than December in my household, at least at the end of the month.

So my goal is to get the Wii Fitness Friday postings done first thing Friday. Then there are no excuses! As of right now, there is no Wii Fit weight loss but no gain either so I am not complaining. Additionally, my neighbor finally got her Wii Fit package from Amazon and now the challenge is on. She has the advantage since she has the average size family and is much younger. It will be easier for her to work out. Come spring I don’t want to be the old, fat lady on the block. I better get my butt in gear and use my Wii Fit and the rest of my balance board accessories!

To your Wii Workout Successes (and mine)!
